Primary-Grade 2 (Ages 5-8)

At this age, our students start to work on RAD Ballet and ISTD Modern and Tap grades, where they are introduced to new steps and sequences at each level and work on both their dance technique and performance skills. At age 6, they can join our Junior Musical Theatre class where they develop their singing, acting and dancing skills, aiming to become a triple threat! Our Acro classes also start from age 7, taught by our Acrobatic Arts certified teacher, Miss Sophia.

Students in this age group have the opportunity to perform in our Minis show that takes place every two years. In 2024, our students performed a version of the Nutcracker especially created for them. In between shows, there will be other performance opportunities at local events, and the option to take exams once students are ready.

Dance Styles and Timetable

Ballet

The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Primary-Grade 2 syllabi offer lots of students to still be creative and develop their performance skills, for example through the dressing up dance, and hide and seek dance. They will be working on fundamental ballet steps and also learn character work that is based on dances from different countries. Students have the opportunity to take either RAD exams or class awards, although neither is compulsory.

Students may also be invited to join our Extension Ballet class, for those students who show a natural ability in ballet and we feel would benefit from an extra class a week.

Modern and Tap

Modern is a high-energy dance style that is often seen in Musicals and other theatrical productions. Students learn travelling steps, including kicks, leaps and turns and develop skills such as flexibility, strength, quality of movement and musicality. Students will enjoy experimenting with rhythm and improvisation, encouraging creativity and self-expression.

Tap dancing is not only heaps of fun, it is fantastic for developing co-ordination, a good sense of rhythm and musicality, as well as strong ankles, legs, and core muscles.

With our combined Beginners Modern and Tap class, students can benefit from trying out two different dance styles in one class.
